Home Office : Etiquette at Work

home office telephone Ignoring proper telephone conduct could hurt your business!
Whether you own a large company or just managing a moderately-manned home office, answering the phone could "make" or "break" your business opportunities.

While it may seem reasonable to let the phone ring a couple of times or let an automated machine attend to the caller's ring, a good-mannered, well-placed response of a "live" human voice to an inquiry could work great for both of you and your business.

Here is a great article on improving your Telephone Skills which could do great things for your business.

Lost Giraffe?

Poor Giraffe
The name of this plant is unfamiliar to me. What is a puzzling here is that these plants are suppose to have the same "age"including the one that stands high among the rest! Poor giraffe is lost in the "jungle?"

Relaxation Through Physical Excertion

Rosario Town Plazajogging man

This is the Rosario Town Plaza at dawn. I used to jog along the pathway that circled this whole area when I was still employed on a pharmaceutical distribution company. The physical activity tends to help me get away from the hectic schedules of my work. One complete lap of this plaza circle is about 400 meters and I average about 10 to 15 laps every day. Daily, on weekdays, I ran this circle right after sunset after coming from the office. There isn't a single day that I missed the ran except on rainy season. Now that I am self-employed, I just do a healthy brisk walking on the area as recommended by our family physician. (To preserve my precious knee, he advised. No need to strain myself since I can also get the same exercise through brisk walking.)

Below is the Church of The Most Holy Rosary Parish. The church is also located along the pathway that circled the entire town plaza. I have taken this shot also just before dawn.

"Dugo-dugo" Modus-Operandi

Dugo-dugo

(Note: Dugo-dugo is a con where somebody calls somebody from your household and tricks them into bringing valuables or depositing cash to an account on the premise that a "loved one" met an accident and need money for hospital deposit immediately. The story posted here was written as told to the publisher but some details has yet to be confirmed as the source was also "under shock" when this story was being told. The incident truly happened though.)

This happened just two days ago. My daughter-in-law was the one who told me this. The "dugo-dugo" victim was her cousin and the total amount involved was Php 9,000.00. It could have been more, actually! Here's her story: "

Somebody (a "dugo-dugo" gang member) called her cousin in Dasmarinas, Cavite and told her that her sister, who was a nurse in the U.S., got involved in a stabbing incident at the hospital where she is working & that she had "killed" somebody!

Somehow, the immigration was able to "transport" her cousin's sister back to the Philippines via Mactan Airport in Cebu. The "dugo-dugo" victim did not suspect anything nor ask why her sister's plane landed in Cebu instead of Manila because they really have a legitimate relatives there.

Continuing on with a rather "sketchy" story, the caller further told her victim that somehow her sister was hurt and was taken to a hospital in Cebu and that she must be operated upon immediately.

At this point, the caller said that the operation cannot proceed unless she can deposit the amount of Php 30,000 to a Smart Money Account.

The victim, who was already in shock of the whole story, told the gang member that she only has Php 9,000 in cash which she will transfer immediately to the account the caller provided. She further promised to get the additional money immediately.

After depositing the money to a Smart Money account, and eager to "save" her sister, the victim went to her other family members to request for additional cash. There, the victim told them where she will use the money.

At this point, everyone tried to gain composure & then somebody suggested that before depositing additional money, they should try calling the U.S. hospital first to confirm the incident. In a short while they were able to contact the hospital and to their surprise (and relief!) , it was the victim's sister who was on the other line. The U.S.-based nurse was so shock to what she had heard & later told everyone that she is okay.

The victim tried to check if they can still suspend the money transfer made at the Smart Money account, but they were told that the money has already been withdrawn.

I was told they are still trying ways to trace the perpetrators through the account number used for the the money transfer. It is also not confirm as of today if the incident was already officially reported to the authorities.

Oh, How I love Basketball!

I love this game! Really! Though I am not that good in playing basketball during my school days, I might say I know the game. And, this play is really one for the books! Homely Modern Office

Recently we moved our office from a spacious 60 sqmts/P12k montlhly rental commercial office to a 40sqmts home office. This is part of our cost-saving moves to improve our operational budget and at the same time, to be able to provide a 24/7 support service to our clients since we never have to leave the office! .Our home office is well-equipped as a modern office should be but I still tried to maintain a "homely" atmosphere outside the office enclosure. This set-up below of a side table is one that I think stands out. (Note: Our family-owned company, LEENTech Network Solutions, designed, maintained & host websites. Please feel free to contact us for your website marketing needs.)

This is the centerpiece of the area outside the main office where a "quick discussion" can took place anytime. I decided not include this area in the main office so it can both serve as a meeting place & as a reception area for our "passing-by" clients.

Charlie-Dummy Cellphone
Today I want to talk about that regular SMS (Short Messaging System) from one of the top communications provider (if not the top!) that I keep receiving everyday! The message comes from "232". This is from SMART. Everyday my cellphone keeps receiving that "triva" question that is "so easy" to answer (though sometimes it made me think a little too!). Well, because it's easy, you are tempted to answer it, and of course the next thing that will happen is that there will be another "232 message coming!

Well, my point here is that, I am trying to turn this "232" off and it just wont! I was sent an instruction how to stop it & I followed the instruction exactly (it even warned me that I WONT EVER RECEIVE ANY 232 MESSAGE AGAIN! IF I PROCEED IN TURNING IT OF. So, WHAT??) but still I keep receiving it! My real problem with "232" (aside from the "load" that I spent every time I answered is that at times I am really, really expecting an important message such that even while driving I am obliged to check for that important message and....walla...its "232" trivia question again!

Sometimes, I was in the verge of throwing my phone out of my car! I am planning to switch provider in due time...but, I have that feeling the other networks are into those "marketing strategies" too. However, according to my son, who is using the "other network", he don't receive such "unwanted" marketing gimmick!

Can anyone help me out in finding a "solution" here?

Charles Daniel's One Day Adventure "Under The Sea"

A day's tour in an Ocean Park is almost a lifetime for a kid! The billion dollar oceanarium that Charles Daniel visited that day is the first and only ocean park in our country. They even say it could be one of the biggest in Asia, even bigger than the famous Sentosa oceanarium in Singapore.

For a kid like Charles Daniel Prodigalidad, it is indeed a "deep experience" as the park features assortment of colorful fishes and various invertebrates found only in our country and of the other Southeast Asia. Charles Daniel was taken through the different depths of the sea that showcases the six (6) different areas of natural inhabitants. A 25-meter long, curved acrylic walkway tunnel allowed CD to “explore” the secrets of the ocean without actually getting wet!

The entire journey did not actually last a day, but the experience will be more than everlasting for a young kid like CD. After the awesome, sometimes "scary" (for a kid as CD!) & educational trip, Charles Daniel was treated to a sumptuous meal in a dining facility at the park by his parents. "I envy you, young man!"

Home Office: Caring for your valued printer

I know this is not a "technical " blog site. However, due to "necessity", I figured I should made a post about the topic . Anyway, it is just a simple reminder that I think anybody can easily remember and implement. It's about caring for your beloved printer that happens to be set-up with a Continuous Ink System! At our office, every now & then I was called to check the malfunctioning unit & and/or at times, is being requested to bring the printer to a repair shop. Maybe having the "How To Care..." manual posted on my blog will help me in reminding everybody (including me!) of the proper caring for this most valued office equipment.! By following the procedure, another benefit is the savings from repairs & lost time ! I hope this helps you too!

How to care for your printer with Continuous Ink System:
Note: Continuous Ink System (CIS) consists of a high-capacity ink reservoir attached to a cartridge via secure tubing. The tubing acts as a vacuum to extract ink from the reservoir and keep the cartridge full of ink. This reservoir allows printing for an extended period of time without running out. Though the term "continuous" means a longer printing time without refilling, maintaining the parts of the system should be given regular maintenance.

Image from www.officespares.com.au

Image from www.microspares.com.au

1. Use your printer in moderation. Non-stop and heavy printing may damage your priner head since it uses heat to print. Even though you are using continuous ink and may have unlimited ink, your printer is still a machine and shall be used in moderation.

2. Use your printer regularly. Your printer does work best when used regularly so it is recommended that you turn the printer on and make a small number of prints using all colors at least every seven days. Not using your printer for more than two weeks may cause your printer to head to clog.

3. Use quality papers. Do not use crumpled or paper lower than substance 18 to avoid paper jam. Paper jam might directly damage your printer head plate and sensor.

4. Use CISS properly.
a. Keep ink tank in the same level as the printer, CISS use PRESSURE to create continuous ink flow of the ink to the printer and changes on pressure may lead to LEAKAGE or stopping of continous ink flow. Leakage may damage the printer.
b. Make sure to remove air vent cover of your ink tank and replace it with filter. You don't have to close it again when you turn your printer off.
c. Make sure to maintain at least one third (1/3) of ink at the ink tank.

I hope this simple Do-It-Yourself way of maintaining your office printers works for you too!! It works for us now!

Remembering Zuellig Pharma

(Note: Zuellig Pharma is a pharmaceutical distribution company in our country.)
Remembering Zuellig Pharma is remembering the best years of my life! I owe to our country's number one pharmaceutical distribution company (during my time) all the logistic skills I acquired through years of working there. High-value seminars focusing on personal & company work values and the best practices in the physical distribution industry were also part of my memorable moments there. I was there when the latest computer hardware were installed and we were the first team to benefit from the latest satellite connection to power our internet connection. I have earned my 15th-year Loyalty Award there before I said good-bye and left to work in one of the country's favorite fast food restaurant. I want to preserve the memories of my stay there that's why I wrote something about it. It's unfortunate though that I was only able to retrieve a few pictures to post.

I love to blog!

Why do I blog?

Before I got into blogging activities, I have already been hearing about it a few years back. I never really thought anything about it then. But, suddenly, the urge to join just strike me. Before actually going into it formally, I first tried to sort out the topics I want to discuss on my first blog. I want to be careful in doing it the first time.

However, when I did my first blog, what I "need" to write is not planned! It was about my son's new pet dog, Linux! I feared then that our new pet will not be taken care of properly as we are all busy doing our daily works. And, so my first blog is actually to encouraged (or discouraged) my son so that he should "personally" take care of his own pet.

Somehow, my blog "reached" him and so Linux is now a well-taken cared pet! Everybody loved him even though he showed "naughtiness" sometimes. That's how I started my blog...and now, I kind of gotten into it. Just wanting to get my fingers on the keyboard at my first chance and keep them typing the keys for words...words.. and more words that came to my mind! I tried to make sense though to what I am writing. That's my whole point why I am doing this..to share my learnings so that others may pick something good from it no matter how trivial!

Live Your Dream

Last year, my daughter went on vacation in Europe. She has been working at a hospital in U.K for several years now and whenever she had accumulated enough vacation days and her schedule allows, she will always plan a cross-country trip for herself! Looking back to her younger days, whenever we have a chance for a short chat, she will always tell me that "someday I will tour around the world!"

Ever since then, she dreamed of living that dream...And, then, several years back, her dream started coming true! On her own, working hard to live her dreams, she now has gone to several countries in the South East, and. last year, it was EUROPE for her. I made a small effort to post the pictures she took on her trip to Europe which she sent to me via email. I was only able to download several. I enjoyed looking at these pictures, and, reminisce the days when she sat beside me dreaming of that dream. Great dreams for a great daughter!

ECI days. Part 2

Yes, of course! I am missing my days at a distribution warehouse of a fast food company. I handled the nationwide delivery of both dry and frozen goods; and, on top of that there are a series of special projects that have to be carefully studied & get implemented. My stay with Express Commissary, Inc. is a challenging experience. Everyday, our team has to find ways to improve the existing system while making all running procedures be followed to the letter. Our distribution company was a candidate for an ISO auditing that time. But then, I have to leave the company for personal reasons. But, my stay there is memorable. Below are some good reasons why my days there are always "sunny"!

The New Knight Rider

The New Knight Rider
Talking about old times & oh, yes, talking about old shows. Surely, there was a time that Michael Knight was an idol! Yep, I have been in that generation when "supercar" K.I.T.T. was indestructibe (well, almost) together with David Hasselhoff! Then, suddenly, David calls it quit! There's that show Viper that seems to fill the void, but it too vanished. Now, I am cheering again! The new Knight Rider is here! Hoorah! Check out my BuddyTv. I am viewing tonight's episode 1:11 courtesy of hulu.com. Click here to view episode of Knight Rider by BuddyTv.

Okay, so you still want to own a pet?

Our pet dog Linux inside his crate

 Linux at his open playground

The puppy is now a dog! (Please see the two photos.) My son said he is decided to take care of Linux seriously. But, seriously, is he really ready? Well, I have the following items listed for him to check out:
1. Dog food is Php160/kilo now. Linux is now consuming about a kilo every 3 days.
2. Purified water for drinking is Php 35/25L. One whole pet bottle of 25L is consumed within 14 days
3. Cleaning water (tap) is about 25L daily. Used for cleaning the dog house and the "biological waste".
4. Large garbage bag is one (1) pc daily or Php 2/day.
5. One (1) hour total for feeding, cleaning & minimum "conversation".
..more listing to come! Just need to refer to my own list.
Extra expenses:
1. Cost of dog house (very minimal since there's already one that I just re-constructed. Remember, I am your friendly neighborhood handyman!) Php 600.00 including the grill, hinges, bari-bolt & pcs of screens.
2. Reinforcement of playground gate & the perimeter fence - Php 600.00
3, Taking out of all hanging shrubs which Linux happens to like pulling out!

So, there it is! Good luck in taking care of Linux, son!

Scientists have found a way to levitate the very smallest objects

Levitating object via quantum mechanics
Boy, this I have to tell you! I I got this from Yahoo News and told myself this news is worth sharing. I am relating the principle involved here as similar to the one that makes my levitating toy work! The toy is called LEVITRON. I have it a few years back and I tell you, I am still struggling up to now on how to make it work properly. Here's the Yahoo News in its short version:

CHICAGO (Reuters) – U.S. scientists have found a way to levitate the very smallest objects using the strange forces of quantum mechanics, and said on Wednesday they might use it to help make tiny nanotechnology machines. They said they had detected and measured a force that comes into play at the molecular level using certain combinations of molecules that repel one another.

The repulsion can be used to hold molecules aloft, in essence levitating them, creating virtually friction-free parts for tiny devices, the researchers said. Federico Capasso, an applied physicist at Harvard University in Massachusetts, whose study appears in the journal Nature, said he believed that detection of this force opened the possibility of a whole new class of tiny gadgets.

The team, including researchers at the National Institutes of Health, has not yet levitated an object, but Capasso said he now knows how to do it. "This is an experiment we are sure will work," he said. His team has already filed for patents.

Just like any other technology, it's already there! Just need to get the "proper combination". I am relating this to my levitating top that applies the principle of magnetism to make it work. I am expecting more news on this within the year. Good works by these scientists! Here's a short video of how my toy works:

My ECI days. Part 1

 KFC Special Projects Team

It is not so very often that one is being offered opportunities to expand himself to a very different field of his expertise. One should therefore find it best to always be prepared for anything under the sun as the changes are never-ending for one's entire lifetime.

Looking back, I was somehow amazed at what I have been through before I finally settled down to managing a self-business. Though I know the list is really "not exceptional" as there are more people, especially nowadays, that have gone to more than I have been through. Nevertheless, I pride myself to what I have accomplished.

My first job is being a plumber, then I turned electrical maintenance(apprentice), instrumentation personnel, warehouse man (later warehouse manager), logistics manager, chicken production special project manager & fast food transportation manager.

Those are different jobs that some are almost entirely not connected with one another. And, those job changes took place in a span of 15 years. The first few jobs are more of a case of "incidental". One job ends, another one opens! Later positions are mostly on the same company and acquired "out-of-necessity" on the part of management. Somebody has to fix something. And, someone has to keep things going! And, that "best person" (as seen by the higher ups) is ME! So my later responsibilities are actually acquired out of necessity on the side of the company. There are new applicants and new hirees of course, but somehow eventually, the responsibilities fell on me!

How does one prepares for the changes? I should say, preparation on my first few manual jobs were acquired "at home". My Dad taught me a lot of things - "hands-on". That plus the things I learned from the school. Hence, when I was offered to handle my first "dirty" work, as a plumber, I never gave it a second thought.. I grew up practically with a hammer, a plier, & a screwdriver at my hands! For the "matured" positions, from supervisorship to managerial, I am thankful to Zuellig Pharma for all the learnings. Almost every 3 months, we are thrown into a continuous barrage of seminars and personality enhancement & that made me to what I am until the time I decided to call it quit on being an employee and then turned myself into being a businessman.

About the photo above, it was just to remind me of one job that is completely way out of what I am doing. I am handling a nationwide delivery of dry & frozen cargoes for a fastfood company. This position was on top of the warehousing function I handled. Then, came the offer to study chicken farming & chicken cutting production! Did I turned it down? Of course not, I took the job and added to my knowledge tons of knowledge including how to determine if a day-old chick is male or a female; how to select a group of chicken that is ripe for harvesting just by looking at their built and random weighing by "hands". How about trying to reduce the chicken's feed consumption by culling those that will not grew bigger anymore and allow the healthy ones to grew faster. Then, there's the challenge of learning how to properly cut a chicken into specified nos of pieces each part with specific weight each!

Okay..I got to stop here. I know you already got the idea. My advise to all the viewers, just be prepared. There's nothing wrong in being over-prepared than being under prepared!

Hello, to my teamates! Liza, Fe, Dory, Tom & Co.- Charlie P.

Building plan for a toy Gyro-Kite

Do-it-yourself Gyro-kite plan from Popular Science magazine
Do-it-yourself Gyro-kite plan from Popular Science magazine
A few months ago, I sorted some boxes labeled "throw-away junks" from my garage. These boxes contain broken electronic gadgets, broken toys, old magazines ..etc. Being a concerned individual that cares about the environment, I spent time sorting the content of the boxes and segregated the degradable from non-degradable junks. Items that can still be converted into cash at the junk shop was also separated.

It was on the box containing old newspapers and magazines that I came across with an old issue of Popular Science magazine dated August 1956. My attention was particularly caught by the article on how to build a toy Gyro-Kite out of balsa wood, wire and cardboard. I recalled then that an elder cousin of mine has tried building it long time ago.I just cannot remember if he was successful in flying it.

Weeks ago, the same cousin of mine who now resides in another country, came home for a vacation in our town. I was able to ask him about the Gyro-Kite and he confirmed with me that he was successful in building it but was not so successful in keeping it airborne for longer time. He suspected maybe something is wrong with the plan. Now, he even wondered if the project was really tested by Popular Science tech people and witnessed it fly!

Today, I am thinking of trying my luck in building it. Being a hobbyist myself, I will try modifying some specs and see if I can find success better than my cousin. The scanned pages of the Gyro-Kite plan from the old magazine is a bit poor. Sorry, I will try to post the complete and better picture of the plan next time. I wonder if anybody has ever tried building the same toy kite from the same plan. Or maybe, there's somebody out there who is interested in giving me some assistance, especially on how to make this kite fly longer if ever I will be able to build it?

Space Shuttle Columbia:NASA faults equipment in shuttle disaster

Space Shuttle Columbia STS-107 Crew
I want to share with you this latest news from CNN about the ill-fated space shuttle Columbia. This was posted last December 31, 2008: “MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- A NASA report on the last minutes of Space Shuttle Columbia cited problems with the crew's helmets, spacesuits and restraints, which resulted in "lethal trauma" to the seven astronauts aboard.
Columbia crew members were killed when the shuttle broke apart upon re-entering Earth's atmosphere.

But the report also acknowledged that "the breakup of the crew module ... was not survivable by any currently existing capability."
The spacecraft broke up while re-entering Earth's atmosphere near the end of its mission on February 1, 2003.
The NASA report found the astronauts knew for about 40 seconds that they did not have control of the shuttle before they likely were knocked unconscious as Columbia broke apart around them.
The report also found that while crew members were wearing their pressurized suits, one astronaut did not have on a helmet, three were not wearing gloves and none lowered the visors before the module lost cabin pressure. One astronaut also was not seated.”
"In this accident, none of those actions would have ultimately made ny difference," said former shuttle program manager Wayne Hale, now a deputy NASA administrator.”

Being a space science enthusiast since my primary school days, I always try to acquire the latest news about space science and then share them with my cousins who are equally interested. During our teens, we used to spend time speculating what will be the next project after Mercury, then, Gemini, Apollo...and Space Shuttle. Oh, how we admire the Astronauts. We also used to build rocket models and space craft models out of cartons and old newspapers and show them off to our friends! That was then. Now that most of my cousins are in the US and Canada, I am just contending myself into getting the latest news from the net and posting my views in summary over my personal blog.

I have to admit I always feel sad whenever something goes wrong with NASA's manned mission, let alone, the loss of the lives of their astronauts. So, this blog is dedicated to the Columbia crew members (please see above Official STS-107 Crew Photo from GRIN) who were killed when the shuttle broke apart upon re-entering Earth's atmosphere. We love you!

Changing times: Bakugan is "in", B-Daman is "out"!

From Bidaman Toys

T'was December 2007 when I wrapped a B-Daman toy ( pls see photo) as a Christmas gift. Honestly, I have no idea how the toy is being played nor where did it originated. I just want to make a kid happy! Since I want to find a good quality B-Daman , I made a quick research first before rushing to the toy shop. After a short "googling", I learned that "B-Daman is a marble shooting toy that can be customized to compete in various types of games. Originally produced in Japan by Takara, B-Daman became an animated TV series in 1993. In 2005, Hasbro sold the toy under the longer name of Battle B-Daman (one of the series of B-Daman). The toys launch a marble from their center and each contains different skills; power, control, balance, accuracy and rapid fire."

I was able to get an original B-Daman and this made my favorite recipient very, very happy! That was in 2007.

Christmas 2008 made me googling another unfamiliar toy - the Bakugan! Okay, I must admit I might be the only one in our place that have no idea what it is. Kids around the neighborhood seems to know a lot about this new hit. (I later found out that there's a local TV station that is airing its anime version). Being the "in" thing for the youngsters, it came to me that it can be another great gift for my favorite recipient! So, as in the previous year, I tried looking for the "original" version of Bakugan. After "googling" a little bit, I found the stores who are selling them and then even became fascinated by this new fad! I am playing it right now...with my young and energetic "playmate".

From Bakugan Toy

Bakugan (pls see picture) is based on a hugely popular strategic card game played with magnetic, spring-loaded marbles (from Sega Toys and Spin Master), The story centers on the lives of creatures called Bakugan and the battle brawlers who wield them. The cartoon is about small spheres from a distant universe that morph into powerful warriors. Young Dan and his friends use the Bakugan to fight for the future of mankind.

The "original" Bakugan toy I bought made my recipient very appreciative again. I myself is very satisfied as I have proven once more that it just take a trivial effort to make somebody else joyous especially on Christmas Day!

And so now, I wonder what toy will be "it" for 2009 ? I would appreciate it very much if anybody out there can help me here. I want to get ahead of everybody in predicting (and acquiring) the kid's latest craze this time! S.O.S! Maraming salamat po! -charlie

Space Shuttle Columbia - STS107: In memories of the Modern Space Heroes

It is indeed not a very well-known fact that many of men's modern conveniences today are by-products of space science and space technology. Whether these devices are built intentionally or just a creation out of necessity, these inventions truly benefited mankind! We salute you, beloved Heroes! Moving forward into 2009 - at Warp Speed!

My favorite TV station teaser ads says "Lucky 09"! In spite of the economic experts' prediction that it will be on this year that we should feel the impact of the 2008 worldwide recession, it does not hurt if one could still be optimistic! (And, even dream of a very fruitful business adventure!)

And so I say: For LEENTech Network Solutions, come on board the U.S.S. Enterprise and let's travel at warp speed towards that destination we called SUCCESS! Before lift off, let's get down to our checklist of shared-values first:
1. Patience (?) CHECK!
2. Determination (?) CHECK!
3. Quality (?) CHECK!
4. Excellence (?) CHECK!
5. Teamwork (?) CHECK!

BLAST OFF!

And as the year 2009 unfolds, it is best to know your individual work values & your teams shared values. How the team work together, especially when under pressure, is determined by how strong your belief are for one another and how focus are all of you towards that one goal of taking the company to a higher level and bringing yourself along with it! Start being aware of your work values are...and then work it from there! Happy trip, everyone!
